“Creativity is the blossom of ideas originated from the emotions and experiences in life.”
What is creativity?
Based on the definition given Dictionary.com(2017),
creativity defined as the state or quality of being creative. It is the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations, originality, progressiveness or imagination.
While for me, creativity in easier words is: the act of creating something new as a product of ideas inspired by life itself. Creativity is like beautiful flowers of ideas growing in the embrace of experiences and emotions given by life, blossoming into marvelous hues of colors. It is when you dreamt of an insanely unrealistic chaos of colors and you put it in your watercolor drawing or when you listen to a song and ideas rush into your minds like fantasy stories. Creativity, the beautiful combination of imagination and original ideas into producing and innovating something new.
To have creativity in our world is as if sprinkling magical dust of dream on Earth, coloring and enriching our lives.
Look around you and you will realize that creativity is everywhere in life, it surrounds us and embraces us. Even in the smallest and most ordinary things that there is creativity. For example: The artistic design of the poster you hung on your bedroom wall, or the convenient invention of zipper, or the famous fictional world of Harry Potter, or even the aesthetic feed you have on your Instagram. These are all examples of creativity being used in our lives.
Although creativity comes in different ways and present itself in various forms in our world, all types of creativity are originated from the combination of the fundamental elements: emotions and experiences. These two features are crucial for the establishment of most types of art and invention in our world, as they are the source of innovation and stimulation of creative thinking.
Creativity exists immensely in the work of arts. Different types of art, ranging from the production of art with paint on canvas , art in form of design, art in literature, art in harmonic music, or art in movies and videos. Art, life and creativity have an interlocking, unbreakable and enduring connection that makes our world delightful and enchanting.
Creativity is the soul of art, without it, art will be hollow and empty. It is an artist’s most dynamic and vital tool, as it has the power to transcend human’s emotions and thoughts into inspirations for creating inspiring masterpieces. Over the decades, artists express their thoughts by the virtue of paintings. They illustrate their happiness and pain through paint brush and colors with the help of their everyday experiences: the pictures in their dreams or the sudden flash of memory from their lives.
Vincent Van Gogh (n.d.) once said, “I dream my painting and I paint my dream.” One of the most well-known and influential artist in history, Van Gogh, has incredible imagination and extraordinary masterpieces that are priceless. He pours his heart as he draws; commits his passion with every stroke; puts his soul into his work. With the experiences and emotions he gained from life, creativity effloresces as beautiful as his painting “Almond Blossom.”
For instance, the oil painting “Blossoming Almond Tree” was created in 1890, with a heart-warming meaning behind the painting. As this piece of work is produced under the loving thought of his nephew (Theo’s son) expressing his emotions of affection, happiness and love for the new born baby. On the other hand, the style of this artwork is influenced and inspired by his understanding and interest in Japanese painting. He combined his life experiences and feelings into his artworks, just like what majority of artists and designers do.
Without a doubt, the design industry (including: graphic design, fashion design, interior design etc.) is also an authentic representation of creativity. As designers are well-known as problem-solvers and ideas generators, their most crucial and radical job is to be creative. And how did they do so? Through their observations of our society and how people think. By joining together reality and expectations; transforming traditional concepts, they form a brand new design or trend.
For example, the most common yet important design work- logo design. Designing an iconic logo as unique and eye-catching identity for a brand requires excessive amount of creativity. These artistic ideas and concepts used in the designs are mostly based on the history of the company and the messages they want to deliver to the customers. Designers have to understand their clients’ needs and preferences through conversations and researches. Moreover, behind the design there should be a significant meaning and valid explanation, in order to do these emotions should be added.
When you see the most widely-known and notable logo of “I Love New York”, it may look simple and very familiar, but most people do not know the designer or the story behind the design. This logo is designed by Milton Glaser in 1977 , to promote New York City. It was made to solve the problem of rock bottom in tourism at that time, by creating an attentive campaign to encourage visitors. This combination of applying real-life events with the trace of emotion, successfully established a creative and symbolic logo that are unforgettable.
Leonardo da Vinci (n.d.) said, “Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen.” Indeed, creativity in art does not restrain only in paintings. Literature is also a beautiful artistic work of words that has the power to touch people’s hearts and deliver morals. Authors write to convey their emotions-sorrows and desires; they write to tell fascinating stories. They creatively incorporate imagination and reality with a touch of sensibility and emotion to create an enchanting and magnificent world of literature.
The extract: “What is stronger than the human heart which shatters over and over and still lives” by Rupi Kaur(2014) is motivational and intriguing. The feminist Canadian poet, Rupi Kaur, writes with themes of femininity, love, loss, trauma and healing, sharing her own stories and emotions through her poetry. Though her poems seem like a peaceful harmony of rhythmical words, however these powerful words can evoke complicated emotions, a mixture of sadness and sorrows, sympathy and empathy, astonishment and sudden realization.... The reason why her words are able to reach sincerely to the audience is because her words are simple, direct and engaging. For instance, her creative inspirations for the book “Milk and honey” came from her personal experiences of stories she heard or encountered herself, especially on the matter of violence, abuse, pain yet also the survival of the heartaches. From the beginning to the end of the book, Rupi Kaur was able to combine stories of bitterness in life journey with the hint of sweetness in each of them to create beautiful poetry. By joining together life experiences and emotions into creative ideas for the origination of her works, she successfully creates resonance amongst readers.
As E.Y. Harburg (n.d.) said: “Words make you think. Music makes you feel. A song makes you feel a thought.” Songs being one of the most general and popular artwork that everyone accepts and favors are principally made from pieces of stories and scribbles of notes with a tinge/dash of sentiment. Thus, the brilliant music industry is also another convincing example of creativity being applied to the production of artworks. In which artists inclusive of songwriters, music producers, musicians, singers and bands, capitalise their talents and creativity into making music and contributing harmonies to our world.
These professional artists convert stories and feelings into both words and melodies. Through the union of intriguing lyrics and pleasing rhythms, music has no borders, it can grasp people’s attention; bring endless joy and inspirations.
In this case, Ed Sheeran being the current most famous and adored singer-songwriter is an ideal example/model. His songs are inhabited by life, love and loss, accompanied by reassuring harmonies and remedying lyrics. According to the Interview Magazine (2011), Ed Sheeran‘s songwriting inspirations came from life experiences and his emotions. He gained his creative ideas from life and death, affection and affliction, which are based on either personal encounters or witnessing other people’s situations. Aforementioned, it explains why he is capable of comforting and connecting with his listeners, at the same time surprise them with his creative mind.
By joining together motion pictures, soundtracks and scripts, the art in the production of movies and plays is a persuasive example of creativity. Film industry is an ever-rising entertainment business that is in high demand of creativity. As without creativity, everything will be identical, nothing new can be generated, thus causing disinterest and monotony. In contrast, with the presence of creative ideas, movies are able to not just amuse audience but also provide inspirations and motivations. According to researches on wheretowatch.com (2013), the creative process and groundwork are managed by participation in brainstorming, daydreaming, sketching, sometimes even road trips and personal incidents to acquire aspirations and thoughts.
The Oscar nominee, La La Land, is currently one of the most trendy and beloved musical movie that includes jazz music, interesting scripts and amazing scenes. In the interview with abc news (2016), the director, Damien Chazelle said that his creative ideas for the movie is actually originated from his personal experience with clogged freeway just like LA- the one that appears in the first scene of the movie. In which he expressed the emotion of ‘wanting to get out of the car and do something’, in favor of seeing the beautiful side of it. This film is also inspired by his personal keen interest and passion in musicals; earnest understanding and emotions of why movies matter. As in the film, the actress, Mia, and the pianist, Sebastian, wrapped up the plot with music and colors in trying to pursue their goals in our world. This romantic musical had not just recounted the invention of Hollywood movies, but also expresses the primitive human emotions of love and desire for dreams. Supported by his personal encounter in traffic and his intimate fondness, Chazelle was able to grant his creative ideas to flourish into an emotionally-moving artwork.
To conclude, all artists can agree on the fact that creativity does not exactly came out of nothing. Creativity is the spontaneous bloom of ideas originated from our memories and thoughts that we see, we dream, we feel and remember. Even in the most ordinary stories, creativity is able to sprout into dazzling masterpieces. Therefore, I believe creativity is the power that everyone owns, and it is one of the greatest gifts God endowed us-just like life itself. For life gives us experiences of lessons and thoughts, emotions of love and pain. As long as we are able to open our heart and our eyes/souls to cherish and love lives, this stunning star of humanity- creativity- will always be bestowing us eternal hopes and wonders, hence bringing lights, colors and joy to our world.

Academic English Final Assignment evaluation
The final assignment of “what does creativity mean to you?” Is an interesting project to do. In the creation of the book, finishing the 1881 words essay took more time than i planned. From the mindmapping of ideas related to creativity i have realized the three main elements related to creativity, art, life and originality. Thus, after brainstorming ideas i created moodboard under the key words. After the moodboard i started on my draft for the quote as my main topic/thesis statement for the essay. With the help and suggestions given by our teacher Ms.Yanti , i have setteled with the quote choice “ Creativity is the blossom of ideas originated from the emotions and experiences in life.” With the quote in mine i started my essay with the examples , evidence, statistics that i researched. For the essay i started with the introduction by delivering my quote and defining the word creativity. After that i talked about how creativity is everywhere in life , especially in form of art. The second part of the essay-the body paragraphs are where i put my examples and explanation to convince the readers. In the conclusion, i once again rephrase my quote and summarize my essay.
Once the essay is done i started on my booklet outline and finish the booklet design in one day.
Throughout the process starting from scribbles of ideas to researching and finishing the work. Step by step , accumulating pieces into an outcome-booklet is actually very pleasing and joyful. Though, within the making of the book i faced challenges such as : finding the right exampls for each idea, or putting the precise vocabulary to exress my ideas, or (especially) making the not-so-familiar reference list with the correct format, even in the last step pf the process-printing i have faced quite a lot of challenges. However, these challenges also taught me valuable lesons, especially on the importance of time management and quality-control. But in the end after i have finished my booklet , i feel very satisfied and pleased. Looking at my hardwork, from scribbles of rough ideas to a complete final outcome. The whole rough process only makes the outcome better, and thats why one of the most significant lesson i learnt during the creative making of the book is that “roman is not made in one day.” Processes , every piece of ideas and hardworks plays a crucial part in everything we accomplish. In concluson, after the project i feel utterly challenged yet happy as i have learnt and growed.

mid term - character design
Academic English Mid-term assignment: character design (descriptive & contrast and compare paragraph) By Melody Pan B18
Merlia Isabelle Brooke
&
Katherine Alexandra De Luca
In amidst of typical busy New York folks waiting at the platform for the subway, a dark-red-haired girl with stunning brown eyes stood arrogantly in the middle of the crowd. With her eye-catching outfit-a black leather jacket- and her professional Nikon DSLR camera hanging over her shoulder, she walks into the subway with absolute confidence, this girl is Katherine De Luca. On the other side of the world, in England, a young and gorgeous florist called Merlia Brooke is watering her botanic garden. With the summer sun shining down on her long golden curly hair, her crystal blue eyes radiate with joy as she admires the blossom of the flowers.
Katherine Alexandra De Luca is a 20-year-old half-Italian American who lives in New York City. She was born in New Jersey on 11th August with a very compatible horoscope- Leo -as she is a confident and bold person. In contrast, Merlia Isabelle Brooke is a sensitive and emotional July baby who was born on the 1st July in 1996. Although, both of them are at the age of 20, Katherine is much more independent and lives alone in an apartment, whereas Merlia still lives in a cozy beach house with her family in a bucolic city, Yorkshire. This result is not just caused by their different preferences but also family backgrounds. As Katherine has a more open-minded and liberal family, Merlia‘s parents are traditional British who are relatively stricter and more protective.
Even though, both Merlia and Katherine are beautiful and unique in their own ways, they are quite different in physical appearance and style. Merlia has long wavy blonde hair and underneath the pearl-white forehead is a pair of sapphire blue eyes like crystal bowl containing ocean water, iridescent and enchanting. Her cheeks blushed with the color of peach, giving a hint of redness to her ivory skin tone. Different from Merlia’s soft and elegant features, Katherine has a stronger and more striking appearance. Her long maroon hair like the color of a red-velvet silk is solid yet smooth. Her pair of hazelnut-brown eyes, filled with complex emotions that no one can ever see through, shows, a sense of confidence that is always visible. Her plump lips, red as strawberries, compliment her suntanned skin tone.
In terms of style, they have extremely dissimilar tastes in fashion. A bright and soft color sundress is Merlia’s favorite, whereas majority of Katherine’s clothes are black. Moreover, their interests and hobbies are also quite distinct.
Their differences are mainly caused by their contrasting personalities. For instance, Katherine is adventurous and brave, thus she likes to travel around the world and capture moments using her camera. She is also outgoing and confident, making it seem effortless for her to converse with people and socialize. While in contrast, Merlia is tremendously shy and temperate, she doesn’t like public -speaking, therefore she expresses her thoughts and words through her books and poems. She has an attentive persona, especially when she’s taking care of her garden, which makes her a brilliant florist.
Even though, Merlia and Katherine are different from each other, they do have some similarities. For example: they are both kind-hearted and loving, who care for their families and friends. Despite the fact that Merlia seems weak on the outside, she is in fact similar to Katherine, who has a strong and courageous heart. Lastly, another characteristic that they share is that they are both hard-working and diligent youthful girls trying their best to pursue their passions and accomplish their dreams in this chaotic yet astonishing world.

Academic English Mid-term assignment character design
-Summary of evaluation-
The assignment is in fact enjoyable as it is interesting for me to design characters and create them through both words and illustrations. The first part : brainstorming and min mapping ideas for the characters was simple. However, as i start to develop those ideas into actual drawings and writing, it was starting to get difficult. The hardest part for me is to transform those words and descriptions of their appearances to actual drawings. Hence, before deciding the final sketch for each character, i researched for references to put on the mood board. In addition, i also tried to sketch different drawings and asked our teacher for advices before choosing the final option. After making the final sketches and pre-writing,putting those ideas and words into an essay was easier. As i had already planned out what to write in each paragraph , thus it was simple and indeed exciting to do the final essay. Overall, i had learnt how to organize and arrange my ideas effectively before writing an essay , also how to manage my time efficiently for each part of the whole assignment. Lastly, I actually really enjoyed doing this assignment as i get to explore and create using my creativity.

Academic English Assignment4-Definition paragraph-Happiness
The dictionary definition of the word happiness is the quality or state of being joyful or contended.Happiness can come in different forms with levels of intensity and caused by diverse reasons. It can be the feeling of joy or the state of being cheerful and positive or the reaction of being favored and fortunate. Its intensity can range from being glad and satisfied to extreme excitement and thrill. On the other hand, the reasons or causes for happiness can vary from one person to another, as everyone has different views. For example, for some people happiness might be formed when they accomplished something great or when they got what they wanted. As for me happiness comes from the smallest and simplest reasons in everyday life. Happiness is when you finished a piece of artwork that you spent so much effort on and as you stare at it admiring its beauty a smile formed on your lips. Happiness can also be a cup of latte with a great book on a rainy day or hugging a fluffy puppy when you had a bad day.Personally, my biggest happiness is being surrounded by the people i love, or knowing that they are safe and happy. Undeniably, the aftermaths and effects of happiness are incredible. They deliver positive vibes and wonderful warmth to people’s hearts;they create adorable smiles on people’s faces. Moreover, another extraordinary thing about happiness is that: you are not just able feel it but you also have the ability to create it and give it to the people around you. It is as if adding more brilliant colors to this world.

Academic English Assignment 3 -Descriptive writing-UIC campus The Library
Although UIC campus is still considered a new place for me, however i do love the library in the school. The library is situated in the basement ,with a marble staircase leading towards its front door. As soon as you open the glass door, a slight and delicate floral fragrance brushed passed you as if it is welcoming you to a peaceful paradise. The library is relatively huge compared to the other classrooms, with elevated, high ceiling and translucent enormous windows that allow the students to see the view outside. The windows are like blue and pink crystals when the sunlight radiates through them, they allow the iridescent sunlight to pass through but block away the scorching heat of the sun. Modern and ivory white wooden bookshelf lined up against the wall filling up the space, adorned with various types of books ranging from academic mathematics to history of art. On top of the bookshelf displays numerous unique artworks created by the design students, most of the installations are abstract and contemporary creating aesthetic and artistic vibes to the place. There are a few comfortable, leather black sofas placed next to a rectangular table-mainly used for discussion and doing assignments by the students. Beside the bookshelf there is a seemingly isolated desk for the friendly librarian; on the other side there are smooth and hard glass desks with computers on top of them for students to use. The library is quiet most of the time, however sometimes you could hear soft conversations and giggles coming from the joyful students. The thing I like most about the library is the serenity and tranquility I feel when I’m there. It is a relaxing and calming island filled with thousands of knowledge and fascinating stories. All in all , I enjoy spending my time in the library as the place gives me peace, decreases my worries and stress for all the assignments.

Academic English Assignment 2:-Contrast and Comparison paragraph-two social medias
Snapchat and Instagram
Although both Snapchat and Instagram are popular social medias and most common-used apps in our current generation, however they are quite different from each other. To start off, the biggest difference between these two social medias is that: Instagram is more of a social platform to post pictures while Snapchat is one to capture pictures. In Instagram people post pictures mostly from their phone library and usually don’t take photos directly using the camera in the app. While for Snapchat people use it to take pictures(also known as snaps) and selfies. In addition, on Snapchat there are lots of cute filters where people can play around with, for example: taking selfies with the dog filter or taking a scenery picture with the tailor-made location filter. In contrast, Instagram only has a photo editing feature. Another difference between the two social medias is that on Snapchat people are able to add friends and chat with them using texts or snaps(including both pictures and videos). On the other hand, Instagram allows people to follow each other and converse through direct messages or comments. Moreover, Instagram has features such as likes and comments whereas Snapchat only has views and screen-shots.Even though, on both medias you can read about news and be aware of current events. However, on Snapchat they provide channels (like: mtv , buzzfeed) for this purpose; on Instagram people explore through hash-tags or other people’s posts. In conclusion, though Snapchat and Instagram have a lot of differences, yet at the same time they are similar as they are both well-known social medias that people nowadays use.

Academic English Assignment 1-Process Paragraph-How To Get Out Of The Friendzone?
Friendzone- a commonplace- we have all been there, so there’s definitely nothing to be ashamed of. Developing feelings for a friend who unfortunately doesn’t have any interest in you and intends to just “be friends”,can be disappointing and painful. You might feel rejected and heartbroken as if you have just gone through a breakup. However, by following these steps, I assure you: you will not just realize that it is time to move on ,but also find yourself getting out of the friendzone completely.First of all, allow yourself to feel sad. “Take refuge in your bed and cry.”-(Rupi Kaur, to-do list after the breakup,2016). It is okay to not be okay, so let your emotions pour; but stay strong and don’t do anything foolish. Then, you’ve got to find ways to stop your tears. Try not to think about them as much as you can, perhaps by deleting their contacts or old photos-this might sound immature but it works. On the other hand, you can also hangout and talk with your other friends or family-know that there are still people who care about you. Another effective way to forget him/her is to occupy yourself with stuff to do, such as your assignments or your hobbies. This truly prevents your mind from drifting towards the thought of them. After that, here comes the most important step: spend lots and lots of quality-time with yourself! Do what you like, perhaps embraced yourself with music and art or travel to exotic places. Through this ,you will be able to find ‘you’, the ‘you’ that was once radiating lights which are full of self-love, hope and happiness. Note that dwelling in sadness for too long is totally not a good thing. A song recommendation for moving on: Wild Horses by Birdy. At this point, you will start to notice that your feelings for them are fading away. As soon as you are starting to recover, you may continue to be friend with him/her only if you want to.Finally, enjoy the comfort of getting out of the friendzone and stay happy!
